Day 10 - July 14 - New York

Natural History Museum
Over the next week we immerse ourselves in New York culture, shopping and sightseeing.

Natural History Museum
This included the American Natural History Museum located at Central Park West and walking distance of our hotel.

The nature exhibits were amazing.

The museum was one of the best of its kind. Our ticket included a 3D film called Dark Matter which gave you the feeling you were floating in space.  It also gave me a feeling of my own insignificance.

Natural History Museum
The weather had cooled and it was raining when we headed across the road to the Shake Shack, one of the popular NYC franchise restaurants.

Dedication to the emergency services
After our late lunch we headed to the 9/11 Museum which is a testament to the resilience of New Yorkers in rebuilding after tragedy.

The memorial and museum commemorates the September 11, 2001 attacks, which killed 2,977 people, and the World Trade Centre bombing of 1993, which killed six.

Particularly touching was a dedication to the people of America from the Massai. The Massai donated a gift of cows however it was decided that they be best kept on Massai lands.

9/11 Museum
Zuccotti Park -Downtown

Whilst in New York we did two walking tours by Free Tours by Foot. Our first was the 9/11 Memorial and the Brooklyn Bridge by Night tour. We met at the Joi de Vivre 'Joy of Life' statue in Zuccotti Park at 8.30 pm and preceded to the 9/11 memorial which is a massive sunken water pool.

This excellent tour had us walking over the Brooklyn Bridge in the drizzling rain. This bridge, completed in 1883, and spans the East River is one of the oldest bridges in the US. http://www.freetoursbyfoot.com/new-york-tours/walking-tours/911-memorial-and-brooklyn-bridge-night-tour/

At this point in the trip we were not rising very early so I cancelled our Free Tour of Greenwich which was an early morning start. In hindsight, booking an early morning tours after an evening tour was a little ambitious.
